SI-PASS UMINHO

The SI‑PASS UMinho – Supplemental Instruction‑Peer Assisted Study Sessions – is a collaborative learning programme designed to support academic success. It is based on the delivery of peer‑led collaborative study sessions facilitated by trained student leaders who are carefully selected and supervised.

The University of Minho is the first higher education institution in Portugal to implement SI‑PASS, an international peer‑learning programme that promotes academic success through the active participation of students in the learning process.

The aim is not to replace teaching or to repeat lectures. In SI‑PASS sessions, students work together to understand concepts, discuss problems, develop learning strategies, and gain confidence in their ability to learn.

The student leader is not a lecturer, nor a private tutor. Their role is to facilitate peer learning by encouraging participation, discussion, reasoning, and collaboration.

In this way, SI‑PASS seeks to contribute to:

  • improving the teaching and learning experience;
  • promoting active and collaborative learning;
  • strengthening academic success;
  • supporting students in particularly challenging modules;
  • fostering a sense of belonging and academic community;
  • developing communication, leadership, and collaboration skills in student leaders.

SI‑PASS is developed internationally through a network of higher education institutions and is supported by the European Centre for SI-PASS, based at Lund University.
